the Warehouse... FDR... Reading... even some Dust Bowl!

Below you will find galleries of my skateboarding photography. Older stuff was shot with my Nikon FE2 with a Nikkor 20mm lens or my Nikon N80 with the 17-35mm 2.8D supa-duppa Nikkor lens. The more recent stuff is with my digi camera, the Nikon Coolpix 4500 with a FC-E8 fisheye adapter. Seeing a pattern here? Sprecken zie Nikon?

ENJOY! And please drop me a line and let me know what you think of these pics! (or just let me know you are out there)

Pay your FDR skate bill! - August 2003
Here are 30 pictures of the on-going construction happening at FDR. The brick escalator had to be jack-hammered to make an entrance for a new pocket/bowl/pool. (depending on what shape gets made, and how much sweat can be generated) Get down there and pay your FDR SKATE BILL! If you want a clean line when the 'crete hardens... then pick up a shovel, a pick or the jack-hammer and START PAYIN' NOW!

Alright... here are nearly a hundred pics from a road trip to the burg! The boyz came to ride Carlos' vert ramp and the little roll-in channel. Pics are of Carlos, Buddy, Faas, Trout, Freddy and a couple other dudes. Thursday nites are becoming a fairly regular session... Voodoo's park makes for good (yet sweaty) sesh.

Kyle's Par-tay! - May 2003
Kyle is getting married!! And what do we do? Binge drinking? Strippers? Hits of E with strippers? Nope, we bum-rush the West Chester skate park and have some good old fashion 1989 skate fun! (with a little al-key-hol and wrasslin!) And there may even be a picture or two of a Red-Rover scrotum in there!
ps. Congrats Kyle! Best of luck Bro!

fdr and the old man of the rope - March 2003
Here lies the old man of the rope... slow and feeble... teeth dulled from countless attacks of the bowling ball variety... oozing noxious fumes... barely worthy of a glance. A truly pitiful beast. Oh yeah, and there's some pics of skateboarding too!

Carlos Visit - December 2002
Here's a quick little update with my new digital camera. (Nikon CoolPix4500) It's of a mini road trip out to Harrisburg PA to visit our buddy Carlos and check out the new indoor park called Voodoo. (phone: 1.717.774.6322) We also helped assemble some of Carlos' 13 foot high, 36 foot wide vert ramp!

SPECIAL NOTE: I've included a couple Quicktime videos. None of them are very long, and they are all around 170-250k. You'll need Quicktime working on your system to view 'em!

Midnight Madness @ Warehouse - August 2002
At the end of July certified letters were mailed to the key holders of the warehouse who were named on the lease. The letter was basically an eviction notice on account of some VERY flimsy grounds. But amazingly the crew are leaving peacefully?! BUT... even though it's August and typically 100 degrees, they decided to still make final use of our old friend, warehouse #13. These sessions were all taken on Saturday nights in August. The sessions are titled Midnight Madness because, in an effort to beat the August heat, they didn't start riding until midnight... and usually continued until there was "scattered sunlight."

Various Warehouse and FDR - March thru May 2002
These are some pics I snapped in the warehouse and down at FDR. They contain the usual warehouse crew: Freddy, Andrew, JoeyP and Nick. There are also a few scenic-type shots just for fun.
I also included a couple of some Black Label dudes that came down to FDR and were pushing it pretty hard on Memorial day! Sorry, I don't know their names. Oh well, if you know them... please feel free to email me with they're names.
Editor's note: "The black lable dude in the white tanktop is Jim Gagne." - thanks Scott.

the warehouse - December 2001
Here are 24 pics from the warehouse around Christmas '01 and New Years '02. The sessions feature Andrew, Freddy, Joey P, Justin and others. I got a couple cool angles on Justin's frontside Rock 'n Roll, and Freddy's transfer air over the doorway gap... and was using a medium flash with blue and yellow filtering. enjoy.

the warehouse - November 2001
This gallery only has 18 pics in it, but I was experimenting with flash strength & color as well as exposure length. . . so, I think some of the results came out pretty stylee? And separate the subject from the background pretty nicely.
Things to note are Justin's slashing of the tight vert-pocket (see preview thumbnail to the right) and vert extension. Also, Fernando gets a couple fashion photos on said vert-extension, and is caught christening the burned-out Honda Civic that was left in front of the warehouse for dead.

the warehouse - October 2001
The usual band of malcontents destroying all hopes for civilized society. (Andrew, Clive, Freddy, Gabe, JoeyP, Nick, Steve and Tex.) This was actually the last session I shot with Tex before he took off across the country to build skateparks with ???'s crew.
This gallery has a little over 40 pics, almost all in the warehouse. (6 at FDR) Noteworthy things in this gallery are Andrew's fancy lip-work on the vert extension, Joey's grippity-grabs over the "media-deck" pocket corner. . . and as always, Tex's technical balls-out maneuvers. Additionally, there's a purdie shot of Wasatch, a double-exposure of Nick & Tex, and a shot of the Civic carcass.

This is simply a half dozen pictures of Andrew (the Lurker) being a crazy goof at the warehouse. He's riding in various honky-tonk costumes, and blazes some vert on the banana board! Look out! He's a crazy man!
There's also a snap of Sebastian and Gretchen on there last visit before they packed up their lives and moved to Hawaii for sun, sand and surfing everyday! They said they were "tired of letting work rule their lives". . .  I hope work has a less substantial grip on their existence in Hawaii.    :-)

Freddy's FDR article - May 2001
This is a reproduction of an article that Fernando wrote for TRANSWORLDskateboarding magazine's May 2001 issue. The article was about the park, and it has a ton of pictures of our local crew riding FDR... and lots of good quotes from the guys. Also, please notice the various picture blow-ups, and Tex's spine-transfer sequence pop-up!

Dear Transworld, if you see this... please don't sue me.

the warehouse - March 2001
This gallery contains close to 50 pictures snapped in the warehouse, around February of 2001. The session consists of the usual suspects tearing it up. (Tex, Clive, Freddy, Andrew, Matt and Ricky-O) There's also a little of Mike (Arms-Mahoney) raping-and-pillaging some pool coping during his break from Pep-Boys. And a couple shots of Steve (F-ass) playing the role of Superman in the rafters above the vert extension.
In the miscellaneous Clive-Silliness category, there are some shots of Clive's ability to vent frustrations on a seemingly innocent plastic chair, and his technique for skating the warehouse in almost complete darkness. (Use the force Luke!) Also, you get to witness Clive try and teach a mannequin the rules to ripping the warehouse!

Early CheapSkates
This gallery holds close to a dozen black-and-white stills, shot at CheapSkates in Conshohocken PA around 1996. The participants are: Buddy Baum, Clive, Freddy, Justin, Moyer (Johnny Tight-Calves) and a color pic of the Woodsman pulling a solid invert on vert. There's also a couple pics of an unknown rider blazing the vert ramp pretty hard.

Early FDR, mostly 4th of July Jams
This is a varied mix of FDR stuff. It ranges from early construction shots, vert ramp pics, a couple shots of Fernando riding the over-vert with long hair, and shots from the good pool soon after completion. There is also a panoramic of the park during pool construction, and some au-naturalé shots of Dave Maxwell (a.k.a. science-fair) playing for the media, on the 13 foot steel vert ramp. (Warning: NC-17 rating, full-frontal almost-stiffy grab)

Method Demo
This gallery contains 8 pics from a skate-demo Method Skate Shop held in the Valley Forge convention center in 1996. The demo showcased the 101 team, with Kareem Camball, Rodney Mullen, Natas Kaupas and Matt Reason. It was cool to see all these pros ride in person, but if I remember correctly, the sketchy slick floors made sure-footed landings pretty necessary.
This was pretty early-on in my experience of taking pictures of X-treme sports. . . I think I only had my 35mm camera for about six months before shooting this. And to make things even more challenging, I borrowed an unfamiliar flash from my work and didn't own a wide-angle lens yet. So, needless to say, from the dozen or so rolls of film I shot, I probably only got 16-20 decent pics. Oh well, you gotta start somewhere, right? (Might as well do it on Method's dime!)

Early miscellaneous skateparks and backyard ramps
This is another hodge-podge of scenes: a couple shots at Maximus in Boston (Sebastian, Brian Patch and CrazyHorse) a couple of Clive riding Carlos' backyard mini-ramp in Harrisburg, some DustBowl pics, a couple shots at Jimmy's mini-ramp (some of my earliest skate photography) a couple at Magic in Reading (Freddy, DailyDave and Justin) some various street-ish shots of Clive and Gabe (University of Penn, Chesterbrook and some school near Chester) Freddy scrapping across the vert coping at Shimmerville and some blood-shots of Carlos' last vert jam. (44 months seems like a pretty damn long time.)

Early warehouse
This is yet another mish-mosh of early warehouse stuff. It ranges from vintage pics of Clive and Freddy riding the warehouse back when it was just two little launch ramps and called "this-dude-Dan's-warehouse". (see preview thumbnail to the right) And then continues up until early 1999, pretty soon before Dan had to go. It also has a panoramic of the warehouse from 1999 and a shot of Ben (with he and Lizzy's little doggie) on the cover of BigBrother Skateboard Magazine, as well as a funny picture of Bud's wide-eyed ride coming outta' the corner. (There's also a good shot of a couple old men stretching before their rigorous game of lawn-darts.)
